The story behind KOSHI is compelling
Eleven year old Kayla Smith was extremely excited to learn that her mother planned to purchase a new pair of shoes for her birthday and was looking forward to receiving her first pair of glitter ballet shoes, which were quite popular among girls her age. Unfortunately, after an ex- haustive search of shoe and department stores in the Hattiesburg, MS area, Kayla’s mom was unable to find shoes in the right size, style, or width. This experience crushed Kayla who was extremely self-conscious about her shoe size due to relentless teasing from her classmates. Little Kayla has a problem that 40% of girls and women in the U.S. face - she has wide-width feet, and on top of this, Kayla wears a size 11.5 wide in women’s shoes.
Her mother, Tina Smith, regularly experiences difficulty finding age-appropriate shoes, in the right style, size, and width. Often, the shoe styles that Kayla’s friends wear are usually not available in larger sizes, unless these styles are sold in women’s sizes. To a certain extent, women with large feet have some alternatives when faced with this problem, but for young Kayla Smith and other girls like her, this intractable problem.
